Bonjour!, ¡Hola!, Guten Tag!, Buongiorno!
On Tuesday 25 September and Wednesday 26 September, Kilmarnock Academy celebrated “European Day of Languages” in style! The Assembly hall was decked out in the flags of all the European Nations and First and Second year pupils has loads of fun dancing to French and Spanish music, singing one or two songs and playing some musical games such as Corners and Simon Says – in French, of course! Necole, Alice and Ryan from 1B all did very well singing two different versions of the alphabet song! The third and fourth year pupils enjoyed a Euroquiz with great prizes provided by East Ayrshire Council.
At break and lunch-time mostly French delicacies were for sale and the “crêpes” (made by the Modern Languages teachers) certainly disappeared “like hot cakes”! There were also croissants and pains au chocolat for sale”. Any profit made will be donated to the school charity.
We enjoyed some great musical entertainment (in French, of course) from our talented pupils – Scott Little's version of “Ça plane pour moi” by Plastic Bertrand ( France 's only punk rocker) went down a storm with the pupils! (Some teachers were not so impressed!) Scott was ably assisted on stage by Mark Strain, Callum Buchanan, Zander Orr and Callum Smith who played their socks off! They all now seem to have a very loud fan club made up of First Year Girls!
A few pupils made a big effort and dressed up in European costumes for the day. The Fancy Dress Prize was won by Kirsty McLauchlan of 2F and Rachael Battles of 2D and Vanessa Wilson of 2S also wore super costumes.
All in all, our celebrations of European Day of Languages have helped to raise awareness of the importance of learning a foreign language and have shown that Language Learning is fun!
