English - S2 Homework (Advanced) Types of Narrator

S2 English homework. Exercise 10.

Types of Narrator

Copy the following note into your jotter.

The narrator is the person that the writer uses to tell the story. Different narrators have different effects.

1st Person Narrator: This is when the story is told from the narrator's point of view. E.g. I walked down the hall and knocked on the door. This is useful if you want the reader to understand what the character is feeling and thinking but it can have biased viewpoint.

3rd Person Narrator: This is when the story is told from an onlooker's point of view. They are narrating what they see happening but it is not happening to them. E.g. She walked down the hall and knocked on the door. It is less biased than 1 st person narration but it does not allow the reader to know what a character is thinking.

Omniscient Narrator: This is an Ďall seeing' narrator. This type of narrator can see tell what is happening and give the thoughts of different characters. E.g. She walked down the hall and wondered who would answer when she knocked on the door.
